As the area's premier no-kill shelter, the Humane Society of Sarasota County (HSSC) engages the hearts, hands, and minds of the community to help animals. HSSC is a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. We rely solely on contributions from individuals, organizations, and corporations. HSSC receives no federal funding, nor are we funded by any national humane organization.

HSSC's strong financial health and ongoing accountability and transparency has earned a Four-Star Rating from Charity Navigator. This rating, which is the highest rating an organization can achieve, designates HSSC as an official "Give with Confidence" charity, indicating that HSSC is using its donations effectively based on Charity Navigator's criteria. Charity Navigator is America's largest and most-utilized independent charity evaluator. HSSC adheres to good governance and other best practices that minimize the chance of unethical activities and consistently executes our mission in a fiscally responsible way.

HSSC is proud to have earned the Platinum Seal of Transparency from Candid (GuideStar), the world’s largest source of nonprofit information. We voluntarily display quantitative metrics to represent how hard HSSC is working toward achieving our mission. We’re proud to use Candid Platinum to share our full and complete story with the world. To reach the Platinum level, we provide basic contact and organizational information; in-depth financial information; quantitative information about goals, strategies, and progress toward our mission.
2023 Small Business Awards Finalist
The Humane Society of Sarasota County was a finalist for nonprofit of the year in the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce's 2023 Frank G. Berlin, Sr. Small Business Awards. We were honored to be a finalist alongside the Education Foundation of Sarasota County (winner) and the Sarasota Ballet of Florida. The 2023 Frank G. Berlin, Sr. Small Business Awards celebrate companies (small, medium, and large - respectively) who have exceeded targets for growth and financial performance; best demonstrated an understanding of their competitors, customers, and the markets they operate in; and have the foundations in place for continued success.
